What is an Enrolled Agent?
An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally licensed tax professional authorized by the IRS with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS, including audits, collections, and appeals. It's the highest tax credential recognized by the IRS. Unlike CPAs, who are state licensed and cover broader accounting services, EAs are federally credentialed and focus exclusively on taxation. Representation is provided once a Power of Attorney (IRS Form 2848) is in place.
How is an Enrolled Agent different from a CPA or tax preparer?
EAs are federally licensed by the IRS and specialize exclusively in taxation. A CPA is state licensed and covers a broader range of accounting services.
